I grew up in South Carolina and completed my Bachelor's of Arts at the University of South Carolina.  I always wanted to go into teaching, but took the first job I was offered, not teaching.  After a few years, I needed radical change in my life.  So I sold all my belongings, packed up and moved to Asia to begin a career in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, TESOL.

Teaching abroad has really shaped my educational philosophy.  I am a huge proponent of multiculturalism and embracing the different approaches to learning.  Multiculturalism is more than different countries, different races, different affluence. Multiculturalism includes every form of culture, including music, religion, food, media, language and many more.  Not everyone learns the same because not everyone sees the world the same.  Embracing those differences, both globally and locally, can help us understand each other and learn how to learn more.

About Me

As a girl, I was a daydreamer.  I still am really.  But I always dreamed of seeing the world.  I loved watching TV shows where characters traveled to far-off places and had adventures.  I just knew that was the life for me.

As a young woman, I was desperate to travel, but found it difficult to come up with the cash and the time to go abroad.  Then a friend suggested living and working abroad.  It all came together.  I already had the travel bug, and now I had a way to go.

In the last 6 years I have visited 14 countries and lived and worked in 4.  I have traveled around a lot of Asia, and some of Europe.  Traveling has been an awesome part of my life and I am very passionate about it.  Traveling has had a huge impact on my professional and personal lives.  I have found my career abroad.  And I have found my husband abroad.

While I am bringing a close to my travels for now, I am also beginning a new adventure in the United Kingdom.  My husband and I are expecting our first child in March 2016 and are very excited about it.  Having a young family makes it harder to travel the world, but I am expecting quite the adventure.

My name is Sarah Higgs-James and in a sentence I am a TESOL specialist, a world traveler and a mum-to-be!
